Born, raised, and living in the pacific northwest, Matt Kolbet inhabits a double-wide with 2 humans, 2 horses, 2 goldfish, 1 dog, 2 cats, 3 sheep, 4 chickens, 3 turkeys, about 15,000 honeybees… and an indeterminate number of raccoons, opossums, rats, and spiders. The place is kind of a mess.

LHP: How long have you been writing?
Matt Kolbet: I’ve been writing for many years, but only recently begun to take it more seriously, not just as a pastime. It helps me apprehend the world better.

LHP: What/who inspired you to be a writer?
Matt Kolbet: I’ve been inspired by authors like John Updike and Robertson Davies, as well as Jose Saramago.
LHP: What genre do you prefer to write in?
Matt Kolbet: I prefer fiction, though am trying to write the occasional contemplative essay and poem.
LHP: Describe your writing process. What comes first–character or plot? Do you “pants” it or outline?
Matt Kolbet: Character comes first, with a question of what they want, and then follows near on its heels. For longer works, I spend more time outlining. For shorter works, I begin and then write the end after the intro. The middle becomes the bridge.
LHP: What is your daily/weekly routine as a writer?
Matt Kolbet: I try to write as soon as I get home from work, or first thing in the morning.

LHP: What are some of your biggest challenges you feel like you have to overcome in your writing career?
Matt Kolbet: A big challenge is how many people write and finding a way to be heard, especially given readers’ subjective tastes.
LHP: Do you have a set number of words per day you target? or do you set other goals to meet?
Matt Kolbet: It’s either number of words or getting to the top of the next page.
LHP: How much time is spent on “the business of writing” – queries, seeking an agent or publisher, marketing/sales?
Matt Kolbet: Not as much time as I’d like.
LHP: Do you prefer short stories or full length novels in your writing?
Matt Kolbet: I think I prefer novels and the pastures to roam in with them.
LHP: Can you give some us some insight into your story?
Matt Kolbet: My story is about the inability to escape, and the undesirability of that escape when it’s found.
LHP: What advice can you give other writers?
Matt Kolbet: I would tell other writers to read a lot.
